First Summer Job
Let me tell you about my personal experience of looking for a summer job. My first job was a referral from a friend to work in a restaurant as a waiter. I worked there for about four months and I left, because the job doesn’t really suit me. I really didn’t like it, but I was grateful that my friend referred me to work there so that I gained some working experience. In the same summer, another friend referred me to work for a consultant company. My position was to replace the person whom was on vacations. I was only trained to be a teller at the Desjardins Caisse Populaire (a bank in Quebec). Therefore, throughout the whole summer, I go to different Desjardins to work as a teller. It was a fun experience, since I get to meet a lot of people. I get to know how the banks work. Mainly about the services the banks provide. The following three years, I worked for different consultants companies that gave me mandates as a teller to replace the people on vacations at different Desjardins. I can tell you that it was very convenient for me, since every summer holidays or winter holidays, they will call me up and ask me if I have time to work. I didn’t even need to bother looking for part-time jobs. Working as a teller Desjardins, it was not a full time job, in average; I worked about 25 to 30 hours a week. Therefore, I can still enjoy most of my summer. Since working at Desjardins did not take too much of my time, I started to tutor other students in CEGEP and high school. My first tutoring job was at Dawson College. Since I have some outstanding grades in my science courses, they invited me to be a tutor for other students. And this became my third job in my life. As you can see that I love tutoring so much that I am still doing this right now. Later on in my University, I applied to different companies for a summer job/part-time job in my engineering field.
Human Connection Network
My first two jobs were referred from different friends. So you can see that network connections are very important. It is much easier to get a job if you get a referral from someone else. Getting to know more people helps you to find a job. Expand your circle of friends and then ask around if the company that they work for is hiring. Like we always say: “Asking will not cost you anything”. The worst case is your friend telling you that the company is not hiring. YOU GOT NOTHING TO LOSE! I understand the first job is always the hardest to find, but don’t give up and try hard. Great results are awaited.

Never give up, keep applying
If you do not have a large network connection or none of your friend is working but you would like to find a job, then you will have to try to apply to as much of the jobs that you are interested in as possible. As long as you get your first job, then later on, other jobs will be much easier to find. Due to the fact that you already have experience, you can provide those experiences to the company which you want to apply. However, the first job was always the hardest to get. I remembered when I applied for my first engineering summer job/full time job, I sent out over 50 curriculums. I only got 2 answers back, meaning I got 2 interviews. I finally got into one of them and it was my first engineering job. As you can see I applied to so many jobs posted but I only got back a few that answered me. I NEVER GIVE UP and JUST KEPT APPLYING. My dad and my sister always reminded me that there is NOTHING TO LOSE. Just keep applying until there is one that is interested in hiring you.
