Understanding Report Card (High School, CEGEP, University)
Introduction to Report Card
Here are the transcripts (report card) that I have obtained in Québec from high school to University.
Feel free to take a look. (Chi Cheung Lau is my Chinese name)
Throughout my academic years, I had always focused on my science courses instead of the language courses. This is not very balanced; I do not encourage my students to do the same. To be successful in life, we do need to communicate well with others. When we speak or write better, it contributes positively to our career.
Some explanations on the transcripts (report card).
Report Card for High School
- The first column “UN” is the weight of the course. This is the weight of the course that we count into the R Score.
- The second column “RÉSULTAT” is the grade that you receive for that specific course.
- The last column “R/5” is to represent the rank in Québec. The rank ranges from 1 to 5. All students in Québec are grouped into 5 groups. Number 1 means you are amongst the best. Number 5 means you are amongst the weakest.
- The before last column “CEN” is the percentile which separating all the students in Quebec into 100 groups. Number 100 means you are amongst the best. Number 0 means you are amongst the weakest.
For example
If you got 95 for the percentile, this means amongst 100 students, 5 students got a higher grade than you and 94 students got a lower grade than you.
Report Card for CEGEP
The transcript for CEGEP is a little bit different in different CEGEP.
- The first column “Note sur 100” is the grade that you receive for that specific course.
- The second column “Moyenne du groupe” is the average of the group.
- The third column “Unités” means the weight of each course. This is the weight of the course that we count into the R Score.
R Score are calculated the same way in every CEGEP.

Report Card for University
In each semester, it shows the course number and course name. Then there is the credit for that course and the grade that you obtained.
- The third column “CR” is the number of credit for that specific course.
- The forth column “GRADE NOTE” is the grade that I obtained in that course.
- The before last column “EARNED OBTENUS” is the credit that I obtained from that course.
- The last column “CLASS AVG. MOY. DU GROUPE” is the average of the group.
- The last 2 lines of each section (semester), there is a term grade point average (TERM GPA) and the cumulative grade point average (CUM GPA). They are calculated based on the number of credits and the grades obtained. (Mostly GPA is used for your first job, usually after your first job, they mainly look at your job experience rather than your GPA.)
Grade point average (GPA) is calculated differently in different University.
